I wanted to share my eye opening experience in hopes of helping someone who may be in the same situation.
I had a total hip replacement. I am a physical therapist here at Green Mt Rehab as well as co-owner. I deal with patients every day with similar problems, however when it came to my hip I was somehow different.
Even with all my experience and being at a plateau, I was not ready to take the necessary step which was having an x-ray. An x-ray would have meant acknowledging what I had suspected for a long time and that was scary. It’s amazing what you can get used to living with. Most of my free time could easily be occupied by other things, so the activity limitations were easy to ignore.
It was one particular weekend where those “things” were away and I realized I couldn’t do anything even though I had the time. It was that moment when it clicked that I had to fix my hip, I had to get the x-ray. The x-ray and the results were a relief because finally I could stop thinking about it and move on to doing something about it. Although anticipating such a surgery was still scary, making the decision to do it was the hardest part.
I wish I had my hip replaced years ago. I should have listened to my wife Jen and had the x-ray sooner. I finally feel normal and I am skiing again.
If someone you know is struggling with this decision, then please have them call me or email me. I am more than happy to share my experience.
